Foto Friday – Corona Arch

Corona Arch, near Moab, Utah. Copyright 2020 Eric D. Brown.

Most people driving through Moab head straight for Arches or Canyonlands. Corona Arch is in neither. It sits just outside both parks, off a small pullout on the side of the road, without much fanfare.

The hike in is about a mile and a half. It starts easy, then the terrain changes. You’re on slickrock, following cairns, picking your way along the edges. At one point there’s a ladder bolted to the canyon wall. You climb it, walk a stretch of steeply angled rock, and then the arch comes into view.

The evening didn’t go the way I’d hoped. Smoke from fires somewhere in the region had settled over the valley. You can see it in the photo, that hazy, muted quality to the sky. I remember being frustrated by it that night. Looking at it now, the smoke gives the image a little atmosphere and a little mystery.
