Foto Friday: The Canyon in Winter

This is a sunrise panorama from the south rim of the Grand Canyon, made on my first trip out there. February 27, 2019, which I only know because I went and looked at the file. Ask me without the file in front of me and I’d have said 2018 or 2019 and left it there.
If you’ve never been, it’s hard to explain how big this place actually is. Pictures don’t really do it justice. You have to stand at the edge of it.
Winter’s the best time to be there, and it’s because of the sky. Storms roll through the canyon all season, and when there are clouds overhead at sunrise the whole ceiling catches the light from underneath and goes red. There’s a band of gold sitting on the horizon where the sun came up, snow on the far rim, and more snow on the rock in the bottom right corner.
