Foto Friday – Arches National Park

Arches National Park, Utah. Copyright 2020 Eric D. Brown.

At the end of the day, traffic through Arches picks up as people head back out after watching the sunset. The light is almost gone and cars are still moving through the canyon. I set up along the road and let them drive past.

The exposure runs long enough to pull in the stars, which means it also pulls in everything moving. The headlights and taillights trace lines across the frame while the rock formations hold still. The sky goes from deep blue at the horizon to almost black overhead, with the stars showing through before full dark.

This is a stack of several exposures, blended to get both the sky and the light trails. The formations in the background are lit by the passing cars plus what’s left of the twilight, not by anything artificial. That warm glow along the horizon is the last of the sun.
