Green River Overlook, Canyonlands

Green River Overlook is one of those spots in Canyonlands I’ve photographed over and over. It sits out on the Island in the Sky, looking down over the Green River and the White Rim, and on paper it should be one of the easiest sunsets in the Southwest to photograph. For me it never has been.

I’ve stood on that butte more times than I can count, and the sky has almost always let me down. The light goes flat, or there are no clouds at all, or the clouds sit in every wrong part of the frame. You drive the hours, you hike out to the edge, you set up, and the sunset you pictured on the way there just doesn’t show. It happens more than anyone posting their best shots online lets on.

This evening was more of the same. The color never really caught fire the way I wanted. But you make do. You work with the light you’re given instead of the light you drove all that way for. I set up the panorama, worked the frame across the canyon, and let the quieter color and the last of the sun on the rock be the focus.

I’ve been chasing a bigger sky out there for years, and this wasn’t the night I finally got it. It’s the color the sky gave me that evening, and I’ve made my peace with that. Most evenings out there look more like this than like the postcard, and it’s still worth every mile of the drive.
