The Role of the CIO: Mentor

The latest edition of CIO Magazine has an interesting article titled “Power from Your People” written by Karan Sorenson, VP & CIO at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals.

In the article, Sorenson makes an interesting claim: The role of CIO goes far beyond ‘leading IT’…it includes mentoring employees and developing employees throughout the organization.

In most organizations that I’ve run across, the CIO is not usually focused on people development or if they are, they are focused on specific types of skill improvement (project management, etc).  Sorenson claims that CIO’s should be focused on building people…regardless of where those people are within the organization.

How refreshing to hear this from a CIO…not something I’ve heard from other CIO’s.
