Hi Cory - stories are what made madden king. They helped people relate to the statistics and to the game. Stories help people internalize an issue and make it there own. Stories are good :)

Thanks Simon. It seems most things seem like common sense...but those common sense things are rarely implemented.

Hi Scot - Thanks for stopping by. Stories do a great job of explaining change and helping frame the vision.

redundancy: I feel like I'm being redundant in the classroom every now and then... but there's something useful in good teaching about saying the same thing a couple-three times, and saying it different ways, to make sure people get it. Some folks get the stats, some get the stories... but by the end of the show, you hope everybody gets it. Madden was a good teacher in that regard: he'd show the numbers, then he'd wrap stories around them. And yeah, people talked about him and what he said. That means he was making an impression, making it stick... which is the goal for every teacher and every leader.

great post, i liked john madden, he may have been a little redundant from time to time, but everyone always talked about him, and he did know how to do those "lessons" very well. it really is pretty simple and he made his living doing it his way.

If you look at a change process, one of the most important parts is to explain to people why the change is needed. This is where management fails. They come to their teams and tell them about the decision and what the change is, but not why it is needed. This, after the management team has sometimes taken weeks to decide a change was needed, why it was needed and then laying out a new direction. By the time management gets to the team, they assume the team knows why the change is needed and just start implementing without ever explaining why my world needs more disruption again. And then the change fails. Stories. Yup.

Inspiring post Eric. When you read Madden's lessons, they seem really obvious, but executing them is what is important. Madden has shown he can execute where countless others fail. Thanks for sharing.
