		<description>What&#039;s the missing element in typical organizational priority setting? Stopping work that no longer needs to be done. An organization may be able to do more with less, but it will flitter away precious time if all the work it did in the past still must be done. The CIO owes it the their organization and the organization as a whole to cut out work that no longer has value. And I believe there is always needless work being done. Identify it. Stop it.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Does the organization benefit from having a Big Harry Audacious Goal (BHAG)? Perhaps. I&#039;ll buy into this idea if the goal is concrete rather than abstract. Too many goal (or mission) statements are meaningless. You would be doing CIOs a service by sharing examples of BHAG statements that meaningfully set a direction for an organization.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I like this post, especially the part about asking the system administrator for their goals. The ultimate test for assessing the real goals of the organization rather than the professed goals of its upper management is to ask the members of the organization about the connection between what they are doing today and its contribution to the goals of the organization.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If the members of the organization can&#039;t connect their work to the organization goals, there is a problem. And that problem is widespread -- most IT organizations have it.</description>
