Dear Eric,

Thank you for this blog.
I'm a student from Denmark doing a project on employer branding and ten minutes ago I was desperate to find inspiration for a paragraph on RBV and the assumption that human capital bring value to organizations - I found it here :).
Thank you so much - now I can get back to work :).

Kind regards,
Helena

Danielle & Mario

Thanks for the references ...they look very interesting. I'll read through these and provide my thoughts.

I'm not sure what McKinsey, BCG or others are using but I will ask around my network to see if I can get some feedback.

Dear Eric,

Thanks for your reply. In regard to suggestions for strengthening the RBV, different authors agree on the importance of complementary and integral use of the RBV with other frameworks. Priem and Butler argue that “a synthesis of the resource and environment-based perspectives might be an important next step toward a more complete strategy theory,” while Burney admits that practitioners combining the RBV with other “demand-oriented perspectives” would benefit from the greatest potential of this framework (Priem & Butler, 2001; Barney, 2001). Incorporating others, such as the dynamic capabilities framework, would avoid the ‘strategic blindspots’ generated when focusing solely on one structure (Teese, Pisano & Shuen, 1997).

While the integration of different frameworks appears as a recurrent solution in the literature, we were wondering how consultants turn the RBV into practical action and suggestions to managers. Do you know if McKinsey, BCG and other management consulting firms use this framework? Insights from their experiences can provide different suggestions for strengthening the RBV.

Regards,

Danielle & Mario

Danielle & Mario,

Thanks for the comment. I've recently been reading more about the RBV and some of its perceived weaknesses....your comments are timely.

I've not had a chance to consider how to strengthen the RBV but would welcome any thoughts you might have.

Dear Eric

Firstly, we would like to thank you for this blog. The RBV has several benefits for firms, such as:
•	It highlights the value of both tangible and intangible resources to implement strategies and as a source of competitive advantage.
•	Assessing resources based on empirical indicators -for example, their rarity, value, imitability, and substitutability- is of fundamental importance to a firm.

However, we would like to know if you are aware of the criticisms raised by Priem and Butler in “Is the resources based view a useful perspective for strategic management research?” If so, have you considered the value of complementing the RBV with other frameworks in order to exploit its potential and address its weaknesses. For instance, by integrating this structure with dynamic capabilities one could respond to the “hows” that the RBV fails to answer (especially how to use the identified resources to create competitive advantage). One of the main contentions is the “prescriptive boundaries” of the RBV; therefore, we were wondering how this would affect the applicability of this framework to your clients’ challenges?

We look forward to continuing this dialogue.

Best,

Danielle Logue and Mario Rodriguez-Graniel
