A techie in a marketers world

For those that haven’t heard the news, I accepted a full-time position with the Boy Scouts of America in February.  I work for the Brand Management Department as part of the Marketing Group.  My role is multi-functional – I do a little bit of everything; Project Management, Technology Management, Strategy, Processes (yeah! {sarcasm}) and in general poking my nose into things that I think I can help with.

I’d been working with the Boy Scouts since August 2007 assisting them with implementing Sitecore. Late 2008 we began discussions about me starting full-time and we finally made it official in February.

Working in this new role is interesting for me. I’m a technologist working in the marketing world…and I really like it. I’ve preached for years that IT needs to get closer to the business and now I have the opportunity to bridge the gap between our technology group and our marketing group.

I think its going to be a lot of fun.  The first month has been fairly busy and has kept me away from the blog more than I’d like but I’ve gotten settled in a bit now…should be back to posting more regularly.

I’ll keep everyone posted on the job.

Congratulations. It’s a great organization that provides a wonderful service. Just don’t tell anyone your a fan of the show “Big Love.”

Working in marketing will be a great change and you’ll enjoy it immensely. Instead of thinking process wise, you’ll have to think intuitively. Very interesting switch which will be both challenging and rewarding.

    Again, all the best,

    Andy

It is challenging and will be interesting for me.

  3. It will be interesting to see how your new roll with the boy scouts progresses. I have a particular interest in nonprofit organizations and would love to hear more about the blending of technology and marketing.

  5. Hi Eric! I must admit my ignorance – I hadn't even conceived that this organization would operate the practices you're now involved in. I believed it to be somewhat of a charity-type outfit beset with second-hand 486's on desks operated by near-pensioners. I hope you don't mind my ignorance.
It sounds like a very progressive outfit. They've secured a real asset in you, and I hope you enjoy the work and it satisfies your curiosity and fulfils your potential.

Congratulations and it seems you are happy with your new post. Working with this kind of organization which builds character and teaching them responsibilities is such an uplifting experience.

I think a tech person can do a good job in marketing. He knows the possiblities of what can be done and how much can you stretch them. So he is the best person to combine both the fields.

    Hey Simon.

The Boy Scouts of America is actually a very young organization…lots of young volunteers really driving the program for the kids.

My work at the National Office is interesting and is keeping me busy. I'm in the middle of everything 'web'…we are really trying to use today's technology to reach kids and their parents. We are seeing some success and hopefully we'll build on that success.
